How to do Minimal Without Losing Character

Minimal interiors have very much dominated over the past few years, however in the wake of the pandemic and spending more time at home, the yearn for an inviting comfy space is real. People inadvertently spent much longer in their homes than ever before, and many of those ultra-minimal spaces just didn't have enough of a homely feel. This is evident by the return of earthy tones and calming blues to the palette for 2023.

One way that minimal and Scandi styles have evolved is by using a bright accent colour, which is mirrored around the room, particularly in soft textured items like blankets and cushions to give a comfier feel to the space.

Whilst this works excellently and there are many amazing examples of how to do this, it is certainly not the only way about solving this issue.

Another technique is seeking inspiration from the East. This year in particular we have seen a huge rise in the Japandi style which merges our much-loved Scandi style with Japanese ideas and interior design techniques. The two styles are both inherently minimal, so this is an incredible look that can bring amazing style and functionality into your home.

If you have an existing minimal space that you need to add character to, I would strongly recommend adding a feature Japandi style wallpaper mural. I have to give an honourable mention to my personal favourite here, which is called Icho from WallpaperMural.

This is such an easy way to introduce yourself (and your home) to the world of Japandi and start experimenting with the style. After all, we all can only learn by experimenting - interiors is a field where you definitely learn by doing. If this mural doesn't work for your room there is a beautiful collection of other Japanese style murals.

I hope this guide helps you to not lose sight of home in a minimal world, and feel free to let me know if you have any comments or questions - I always love discussing interiors!
